Today’s Story

The lights keep going out in the Morrison home and it’s got Hope excited and Tim irritated. It’s a lesson about expectations and knowing that God is the only guarantee in this enlightening adventure.

How about you?
Have you ever had expectations that people or things would always be there, and when they weren’t, you were really frustrated?

Check this out…
Jesus wants us to be prepared no matter what happens. If people fail us, or the lights fail us, he wants us to be ready. This means preparing our hearts to have their needs fully met by our Loving Creator, so when things don’t go our way, we will still be okay.

In this episode, Grace talked about how Jesus wants us to be prepared like the ten women who were waiting for the bridegroom to arrive for the wedding. This Biblical story comes from Matthew 25.

Some of the girls in this parable were ready with extra oil just in case the bridegroom took a long time to come. The rest of the girls weren’t ready with extra oil. So when the bridegroom arrived later than they anticipated, the girls who were unprepared said to those who were prepared: “'Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.” But the wise girls said, “'No…there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.” Because the unwise girls had to leave, they missed the bridegroom and couldn’t go to the wedding.

In the same way, we need to be ready. Not for a literal wedding, but for the day when Jesus comes. Hebrews 12: 1-2 says:

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.”

We need to “fix our eyes” not on other people, not on whether or not things go our way, but on Jesus. We need to get our needs met fully by him, and in that way, be prepared for no matter what happens. So that way, when the hard times come—or the lights go out—we won’t be frustrated. But we will be able to rest, knowing that because of the strength of Jesus fully meeting our needs within us, we are ready for anything.
