Today’s Story

Haley wants to enter the Miss Rhubarb Festival pageant, but doesn’t have a dress, a talent, or the experience to back it up. But with the help Tim and Mary Morrison, Haley is able to compete in the competition and learn with the whole family what it means to support those you love.

How about you?
Have you ever wanted to help someone in need, but didn’t think you had anything to give?

Check this out…
Everywhere you go, it seems like you have to be super-talented or super-rich to do anything of value in this world. But Jesus doesn’t think so. He takes this idea of the world and flips it upside-down by showing us what it means to truly support our friends and family.

In Mark 12:41-43, Jesus showed his disciples what is important to him while they were in the temple:

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.

Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

In this episode, Mary Morrison really wanted to give something big to have Haley see that she loved and supported her. She thought that this meant she had to hand-sew the dress Haley wanted to wear for the pageant, even though she wasn’t a very great seamstress.

But when her sewing plans began to unravel, Mary offered Haley the only thing she had: Her simple love and support. She didn’t think that it would be enough. But like the woman with only two coins in the Bible, Mary’s “little gift” was just the right thing to give.

Jesus doesn’t care about how much we can give to others. What matters to him is that we are giving from our hearts. And if our heart is in a right place, with God’s help, the receiver will be immeasurably blessed by our giving.
