The tongue is a very small part of the body, but we can find many places in the Bible where we are told to guard or control our tongue very carefully because of the serious damage it can do. One of the most famous passages is in the book of James—toward the end of the Bible. In chapter 3, we find these words:
When we put bits into the mouths of horses
to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example.
Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a
very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise the tongue is a small
part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set
on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the
parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his
life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
Pretty strong words for sure! And it might even seem like there’s no hope to get it right with the tongue, but keep reading, and you’ll find that James goes on to say that humbly calling on the Lord for help and wisdom, is what will help us with not only our tongues, but also every other struggle with sin that we face.
