Monica Richter is locked up in jail, and doesn’t like being there at all. But the worst part for Monica is the fact that she has no control of even her daily life anymore. It’s a difficult look at who is really in control in this life.

“I give up,” can be some of the hardest words to say, and for some reason, they are especially hard to say to God. It’s funny, because, as Christians, we work so hard at praying, and saying we need to “give it up to the Lord,” but how often do we really do that? And why don’t we?

In today’s episode, Monica is grappling with some of these “give up” questions on her own. Living in jail, she is at the end of her rope because she can’t change even a fraction of what is going on around her. She can’t change the food, the clothes, who she lives with, or even that she stays there. She has nothing.

But it is in this state that Monica seems to finally realize that she has nothing. Apart from Christ, this wealthy, powerful woman in the world’s eyes is just a beggar in the eyes of Jesus.

But aren’t we all? What do we have to offer the King of the Universe? In Job 38, God says to Job when he questions his power, Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone- while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

God is all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-good. We don’t really have much to say when we are measuring against a God who laid the earth’s foundation. So then if this is the case, why don’t we “give up” our lives to God more often? If he is all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-good, then why don’t we trust him with our lives?

Let’s make that our prayer today to give up our desire to be in control of our lives. After all, he the Maker of the Heaven and the Earth has good things planned for us. Jeremiah 29:11 says, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

He is good, he is loving, and he is trustworthy. So let’s give up our lives to Him more and more each day.
