The Circle
Child: Hey, don't go away. It's time to read Keys for Kids.
Uncle Charlie: Hi, Uncle Charlie here. And it is time to read Keys for Kids. Why don't you get your Bibles ready for the scripture reading while our kids sing a bit for you? Hey, I tell you what. Why don't you get up and march around? Here we go.
Child: I may never march in the infantry Ride in the cavalry Shoot in your to I may never fly on the enemy But I'm in the Lord's army I'm in the Lord's army I'm in the Lord's army I may never march in the infantry Ride in the cavalry Shoot in the artillery I may never fly or the enemy But I'm in the Lord's army.
Uncle Charlie: Oh, that was good singing. Turn to Psalm 90. Psalms. That's about in the middle of your Bible. Psalm 90. I'm going to start reading right at the first verse. Lord, Thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations before the mountains were brought forth or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God. Thou turnest man to destruction and sayest, return, ye children of men for a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past and as a watch in the night.
Our scripture today goes along with our story, and the story is called the Circle. Seven year old Becky was always full of questions. Questions like how many animals were on the ark? How did Jonah keep from drowning in the whale's tummy? How far away are the stars? Can we take a trip to one of them? One day she came to her mother with a real stumper. Mom, who made God?
No one did, mother answered. Then where did God come from? Becky wanted to know. Mother shook her head a bit perplexed as to just how to answer that. God always was, she said. I'm afraid I can't explain it so that you can understand. As you grow older, you will understand it a bit better. But even then it will be hard. You see, our minds are not as great as God's mind. And there are some things we just can't understand. Someday when we get to heaven, we'll understand it a whole lot better. For now, we just have to accept the fact that God has always existed. But he had to come from somewhere, insisted Becky. Mother took off her wedding ring and handed it to Becky. I want you to tell me where this ring starts and where it stops, she said. Becky looked at the perfect circle. But it doesn't start or stop, she replied. It's just a circle that doesn't have a beginning or an ending. And that's like God, honey. God is eternal. He never had a beginning, and he has no ending. Mother put the ring back on her finger as she continued. You see, we think of our lives in minutes and days and weeks and years. But with God there is no such thing as time. He's always the same. Yesterday, today, and forever. Boy, that's really something to think about, becky said. Mother set a plate of cookies and a glass of milk on the table. I think it's time you rested your brain from all those big questions and had some chocolate chip cookies and some milk, she said with a smile. How about you? Aren't you glad your God is so great that no human mind can fully understand Him? That's one of the things that makes him God. Our phrase is Psalm 90, verse 2 from everlasting to everlasting. Thou art God. Our key is God is eternal. Hey, thanks for taking Time for Keys for Kids.
